System, Help! I Refuse To Follow the Plot

Chapter 2

There was no other explanation. She had to be having an alcohol-induced dream.

How else was she supposed to explain why she suddenly looked so damn good?

Song Anli stepped back from the mirror and examined herself from head to toe. The satin chemise she wore hugged her figure beautifully, accentuating her waist and hips in ways her usual oversized pajamas could only dream of accomplishing.

Curious, she cupped her chest with both hands, giving it an experimental squeeze before sighing in disappointment.

"That's still the same," she grumbled.

Come on, dream! Help a girl out!

Still, she supposed she couldn't complain too much. If this was a dream, then her subconscious certainly knew how to make a woman feel like she'd finally made it in life.

For one thing, the bathroom was enormous.

There was a beautiful eggshell-colored bathtub, a spacious walk-in shower, and even a bidet. The decorations were tasteful, with dark green, muted brown, and dusty pink accents that reminded her of an expensive bouquet of roses.

The sink was made of speckled marble, and the neatly folded towels looked so ridiculously fluffy that Anli had to resist the urge to bury her face in them.

Actually, why resist?

She picked one up and pressed it against her cheek.

"...Oh, that's nice."

If she ever became rich, she was buying a hundred of these.

After spending another few minutes admiring her suspiciously gorgeous reflection, Anli finally left the bathroom to get a proper look at the room she'd woken up in.

And what a room it was.

Silk sheets, goose-feather pillows, floor-to-ceiling windows, elegant wooden furniture, and plush rugs that practically swallowed her feet. Everything looked expensive enough to make her bank account cry.

But the real attraction was the view.

Beyond the enormous windows stretched a breathtaking panorama of the Hai River, its waters glimmering beneath the sunlight as buildings lined the distant shore.

Anli stood there for a moment, taking it all in.

Holy shit.

This dream had made her filthy rich!

Maybe she should stop complaining about her miserable life before bed. Apparently, her subconscious was more than capable of providing her with a better one.

She was just considering whether she should test out the ridiculously comfortable-looking bed when a sudden flash of bright blue light filled her vision.

"What the hell?!"

Anli recoiled, squeezing her eyes shut before blinking rapidly to clear her vision.

When she opened them again, something was floating directly in front of her face.

"...Huh?"

It resembled a translucent computer screen, except there was no computer attached to it. The glowing blue display hovered in midair, following her gaze even when she shifted her head.

And in the middle of it sat a ridiculously cute bunny avatar.

A bunny?

Why a bunny?

Before she could decide whether her dream had taken a strange turn, words appeared across the screen.

《Welcome to your personalized melodrama!》

Anli blinked.

Oh.

Was this dream supposed to be like one of those stupid Chinese dramas she'd been watching before passing out?

Well, that certainly explained the excessive wealth and suspiciously perfect appearance.

"Uh... hi?"

She awkwardly raised a hand.

To her surprise, the little bunny waved back.

《I guess you're wondering why you're here?》

"Not really," Anli replied with a shrug. "I mean, it's a dream. I'll eventually wake up."

《Dream?》

The bunny tilted its head before bouncing around the screen as though laughing at her.

Anli felt her eye twitch.

《What makes you say that?》

"Because I'm not filthy rich, and I definitely don't look this good in real life." She gestured toward herself. "Obviously, I'm fantasizing about a life that isn't mine."

A perfectly reasonable explanation, if anyone asked her.

The bunny stopped bouncing.

For a moment, it simply stared at her, its little ears twitching as though it were considering her answer.

Then, without addressing anything she'd just said, another message appeared.

《You need to complete this drama in order to win the game!》

"Win?"

Anli frowned.

"Why are you making this sound like a game?"

The bunny stared at her again.

Its expression was difficult to read, mostly because it was a cartoon rabbit, but Anli could have sworn it looked confused.

Then, as though deciding she must be joking, it suddenly began hopping excitedly around the screen.

《Let's begin! ♡》

"Wait, begin what?"

Sparkles exploded across the display.

Anli flinched as the screen grew brighter, colorful little hearts appearing around the bunny before a ridiculously dramatic fanfare seemed to play directly inside her head.

"Hey! Don't ignore me!"

Unfortunately, her protests fell on deaf ears.

The bunny disappeared behind a shower of glitter, and enormous white letters materialized across the glowing screen.

《LOVE IS IN THE AIR!》

《PERSONALIZED DRAMA FOR CHARACTER A》

Anli stared.

Then she blinked.

"...Huh?"

Character?

What did it mean, Character A?

And more importantly...

What the hell was with that title?!

Love Is in the Air?

Seriously?

Even the trashy dramas she watched after work had more creative names than that!

Anli crossed her arms, thoroughly unimpressed.

"Couldn't you come up with a better title?"
